Since 2012, Jiang’s unique creations have steadily gained popularity among rose enthusiasts, with the Tianlang series becoming a beloved symbol of Chinese rose innovation. Today, I want to share some of my favorite Chineseroses, all bred by Jiang Zhengzhi, TianLang Rose.
Cinnabar Bowl (朱砂碗 / Zhu Sha Wan)
Year Introduced: 2022
This exquisite cut-flower rose features a distinctive cupping shape, with layers of petals forming a rounded, baozi-like bloom. As it opens fully, the bloom becomes more exuberant, showcasing its vibrant red hue.
Why I Love It: Its perfectly rounded shape and rich red color are mesmerizing. However, in summer, the blooms shrink significantly, leading me to affectionately nickname it "Cinnabar Kungfu Tea Cup."
Ji Se (霁色)
Year Introduced: 2021
A stunning shrub rose, Ji Se captivates with its soft lavender petals adorned with a delicate “Cupid’s bow” at the edges. Its blooms measure about 10 cm (4 inches) and exude a captivating blend of citrus and old rose fragrances.
Noteworthy Feature: Ji Se’s aroma is unmissable. Its scent seems to beckon you even before you lay eyes on the bloom, drawing you closer to appreciate its mix of refreshing citrus and classic rose notes.
Peach Dye (桃染)
Year Introduced: December 2020
Peach Dye’s two-toned flowers, with soft pink outer petals and orange-pink inner petals, are a visual delight. The blooms are large, ranging from 8-13 cm (3-5 inches), and emit a heady mix of musk and myrrh fragrances.
Special Traits: This heat-tolerant rose performs exceptionally well in summer, reblooming quickly. With a compact height of 60-90 cm (2-3 feet), it’s perfect for garden planting and offers strong disease resistance.
Notes: Peach Dye and Summer Fireworks, they look similar in pictures. But Peach Dye’s bloom size is way much bigger than summer Fireworks. Summer Fireworks's color is darker.
Summer Fireworks (夏日花火)
Year Introduced: 2012
With salmon-pink blooms that fade to softer tones in high temperatures, this shrub rose is a vibrant addition to any garden. Growing 1.5-2 meters (5-6.5 feet) tall, it boasts a fast growth rate, excellent branching, and glossy leaves.
Heritage: A cross between 'Lady’s Heritage' and 'Brown Velvet,' it inherited the rounded cupping shape of its mother and a blend of warm colors from both parents. Summer Fireworks is a prolific bloomer, with branches that can produce up to 10 flowers at a time.
Kong Meng (空蒙)
Year Introduced: 2014 (marketed in 2018)
Kong Meng is a floribunda rose with lavender-purple blooms and a hint of pink. The flowers, measuring 6-8 cm (2-3 inches), carry a rich fragrance of damask rose and musk.
Heat Tolerance: This rose thrives in hot climates (zones 8-10), maintaining its beautiful cupping shape in high temperatures. However, it struggles in cold, rainy conditions.
Rouge (胭脂扣)
Year Introduced: 2012
Rouge, a climbing rose, features clusters of dainty pink flowers with silvery-white highlights at the petal edges. Despite its small blooms (3-4 cm / 1-1.5 inches), it creates a spectacular floral display in spring, resembling a sea of blossoms.
Growth Habit: Rouge is a fast-growing climber with flexible canes, reaching up to 4 meters (13 feet). It thrives in shaded or poor soil conditions, making it an excellent choice for walls, fences, and arches.
Silk Garment (罗衣)
Year Introduced: I Don't Know. Sorry. :)
Noted for its thornless or nearly thornless canes, this climbing rose is a gardener’s delight. Its large pink to soft purple blooms exudes a heady mix of fruity, old rose, and myrrh fragrances.
Ideal Use: With a height of 2-3 meters (6.5-10 feet), Silk Garment’s vigorous growth, disease resistance, and abundant flowering make it perfect for trellises and other vertical displays.
Yinyin Qing (隐隐青)
Year Introduced: 2021
A shrub rose with deep-cupped blooms in a captivating lavender hue, Yinyin Qing radiates elegance. The wide silver-white outer petals add depth and contrast to its rich color.
Fragrance and Performance: Its powerful aroma combines old rose, citrus, and myrrh notes, making it a standout for both garden display and vase arrangements. This rose thrives in summer and reblooms prolifically.
